A Most Welcome Guest - Ramadan

Let your moon shine
O Ramadan once more
For Satan will resign
And this month he'll abhor

In your presence, the Divine
Revealed His Holy Book
Sent for all as a sign
O the many hearts it's shook

Ramadan, the Month of Mercy
A most welcome guest
A gift of clemency
For the one who is blessed

We abstain from food and drink
And other sinmaking too
Surely its time to think
Ourselves thoroughly through

Come the first third
The Mercy trimester
To say a good word
Is better than to sequester

One fard prayer counted Seventy
Multiplied graciously in reward
A sunnah as fard, increased in degree
Benevolence from the One & Only Lord

Come the second third
The trimester of Forgiveness
Flying past us like a bird
Above us, the expecting witness

We offer to You bundles of sin
Waiting for Your Pardon
From the mess kept within
Lest our hearts harden

Come the last part
The final third at last
Freed from the fire, many a heart
As we conclude the fast

Laylatul Qadr, the master of all nights
Descends upon the Earth
And takes us to spiritual heights
A night better than a thousand, more than we give its worth

With its departure come festivities
A time of joy and play
Will we return to our proclivities
Before Ramadan's stay?

And so I ask and wonder
If we should stop and ponder
Whether our hearts are close or yonder
To the consciousness of Him, I wonder..
